Clay Pell is the politician husband of former Olympic champion figure skater, Michelle Kwan. His wife is known around the world for her accomplishments on and off the ice, on the other hand, Pell is also a well-known figure on his own field, politics.

Clay was born Herbert Claiborne Pell IV on November 17, 1981. The Arizona native studied law and is a lieutenant commander and judge advocate in the United States Coast Guard Reserve.

Prior to military service, Clay worked for the CIA, State Department, and the international law firms of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Baker &
McKenzie, and Uría Menéndez. He helped lead a national campaign to increase funding for inexpensive, lifesaving medicines for children under five.

Pell might be well remembered for his loos in the run for the 2014 Democratic Party nomination for Governor of Rhode Island.

The grandson of the late Sen. Claiborne Pell, Clay Pell graduated from Harvard College in 2005 with high honors and a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies. Pell went on to graduate from Georgetown University Law Center with a J.D. Clay who is fluent in Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic –is also a recipient of the CIA’s Exceptional Performance Award.

Pell also served as a White House National Security staffer under President Obama from 2011 until 2012. The following year he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Office of International and Foreign Language Education at the United States Department of Education.

He and legendary figure skating champion tied the knot in January 2013. The two began dating in April 2011. Pell proposed in September 2012.

According to People, Michele wore a cascading veil and a classic ivory gown.

Clay’s wife a badass former figure skater. Kwan is a 5-time world champion figure skater and 2-time Olympic medalist.  At age 13, the California native finished eighth in the 1994 World Championships.

 

Following a serious injury, Kwan was forced to withdraw from the 2006 Olympics. She stepped away from the sport and decided to attend the University of Denver to finish her bachelor’s degree. She continued her studies at Tuft University in 2009 where she enrolled in a two-year master’s program. Instead of competing, Kwan served as a TV correspondent for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

After completing her degree, she landed a job in the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Michelle and Clay Pell may be on the market again as the couple is said to have separated. According to reports, Pell has actually gone on to file for divorce, according to TMZ,

Speaking about their wedding day, he told People

“I could feel this energy, this sense of grace and movement and comfort to me the whole time. This contentedness, whether we were holding hands, or hugging, or kissing – she has such warmth for me and I just felt this fire the whole day, and I still do.”
