In an unexpected turn of events, Derrick Ward, former NFL running back, was taken into custody in Los Angeles on Monday due to allegations of multiple robberies. TMZ reported the news first. Ward, a key player in the New York Giants’ victory over Tom Brady’s unbeaten New England Patriots in the 2007-08 Super Bowl season, is under scrutiny for purportedly robbing a range of businesses, including gas stations.

The 43-year-old Los Angeles native didn’t use a firearm during the alleged robberies, according to law enforcement. Instead, they claim that Ward, who stands at 6-feet and weighs 230 pounds, employed force and intimidation to extract money from these establishments. As of Tuesday, Ward remains in police custody with his bail set at $250,000, TMZ reports.

Ward had a successful eight-year stint in the NFL, playing for teams such as the Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Houston Texans. He was a formidable part of the Giants’ dynamic backfield, alongside Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. This trio was fondly referred to as “Earth, Wind and Fire”.

However, Ward missed out on the Super Bowl face-off against the undefeated Patriots in February 2008 due to a fractured left fibula, which prematurely ended his season in Week 13. Reflecting on this, Ward shared with media.

“One of the hardest experiences I’ve ever been through… I always dreamed about playing in the Super Bowl when I was a little kid. I was just excited my teammates got me a Super Bowl ring.”

Ward made a remarkable comeback the following year, registering a career-best 1,023 rushing yards with an unmatched average of 5.6 yards per attempt in the NFL. This stellar performance led him to secure a four-year contract with the Buccaneers in 2009, worth $17 million.

Over his career, Ward participated in 93 games and amassed 2,628 rushing yards from 551 attempts, along with 12 touchdowns. He was initially picked by the Jets in the seventh round (235th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. However, he was let go in September before that season kicked off.

Prior to his NFL journey, Ward spent time at Fresno State and Ottawa University in Kansas. It was after this that he decided to put his name forward for the NFL.
