Meet Kristen Laviolette; she is the beautiful wife of NHL coach Peter Laviolette. The current head coach for the Nashville Predators was a defensive man for the New York Rangers and the USA National Team prior to his retirement in 1987.

Kristen Laviolette, formerly known as Kristen Jean Hasenfus, was born on July 10, 1975, in Norfolk, Massachusetts.

She studied at the International Air Academy; she was working at the Delta Airlines counter when she met Peter, who was at the time playing for Providence.

Peter and Kristen Laviolette tied the knot in June 1996. They have three children together: a daughter, Elisabeth, and two sons, Peter III and Jack. Their son Peter, was 25, when it was announced he signed with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers.

Peter Laviolette Playing Career

6’2″ Peter Laviolette was born on December 7, 1964, in Franklin, Massachusetts. He graduated from  Franklin High and Westfield State College. Laviolette’s playing career primarily unfolded in the minor leagues, spanning a decade across various teams.

Although he had a brief stint with the New York Rangers in the NHL during the 1988–89 season, appearing in 12 games, he didn’t register any points during that time. Despite his limited NHL experience, Laviolette represented the United States in the Olympics twice, in 1988 and 1994, showcasing his talent on the international stage.

Early Coaching Career

  • Started coaching as head coach of the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers.
  • Led the Nailers to a successful season with a 37–24–9 record and a playoff berth.

AHL Success with Providence Bruins

  • Took over as head coach of the Providence Bruins in the AHL.
  • Coached the team to a remarkable 56–15–4 regular-season record in 1998–99.
  • Won the AHL Calder Cup Championship with a 15–4 playoff record and earned the AHL Coach of the Year award.

NHL Coaching Beginnings

  • Became an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins.
  • In 2001, he departed for the head coaching position with the New York Islanders.

New York Islanders

  • Led the Islanders to the playoffs in both seasons, breaking a seven-year playoff drought.
  • Achieved 96 points in the first season, nearly winning the Atlantic Division.
  • Fired on June 3, 2003, after two seasons with the team.

Success with Carolina Hurricanes

  • Took over as head coach for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2003–04 season.
  • Led the Hurricanes to their first Stanley Cup Championship in 2006.
  • Guided the team to solid regular-season performances and playoff appearances.

Philadelphia Flyers

  • Replaced John Stevens as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2009.
  • Led the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the Chicago Blackhawks.
  • Notable for his fiery demeanor and memorable quotes during the HBO series 24/7: Flyers/Rangers.

Nashville Predators

  • Hired as head coach of the Nashville Predators on May 6, 2014.
  • Led the team to multiple playoff appearances and franchise records.
  • Advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017.
  • Fired by the Predators on  January 6, 2020.

Washington Capitals

  • Named head coach of the Washington Capitals later that year. Parted ways with the Capitals on April 14, 2023.

New York Rangers
