Jonah Heim MLB Career Timeline

  • In 2013, the Baltimore Orioles picked Heim straight out of high school during the fourth round of the MLB Draft. He was the 129th overall selection.
  • Despite having a commitment to play college baseball at Michigan State, Heim chose to join the Orioles, receiving a signing bonus of $389,700.
  • His rookie season was spent with the GCL Orioles in the Gulf Coast League. However, he had a challenging start, batting just .185 with four RBIs across 27 games.
  • His performance didn’t improve much in 2014, but the Orioles’ hitting coach, Jeff Manto, wasn’t overly concerned, attributing the lack of progress to limited high school playing time.
  • In the same year, Heim played for both the GCL Orioles and Aberdeen IronBirds, part of the Class A Short Season New York-Penn League.
  • Come 2015, Heim started playing with the Delmarva Shorebirds, part of the Class A South Atlantic League, sharing the catcher’s spot with Alex Murphy.
  • During this season, his performance improved, but an injury in May put him on the injured list until late August.
  • Heim ended the 2015 season with a .252 batting average, one home run, and 18 RBIs across 45 minor league games.
  • The following year, he was promoted to the Frederick Keys and named a Carolina League All-Star. Despite an overall .216 batting average, this period marked significant growth in his offensive game.
  • In August 2016, Heim was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for Steve Pearce. He played for the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the Class A-Advanced league, making a game-winning RBI in his debut.
  • Heim began 2017 with the Bowling Green Hot Rods before being promoted back to the Stone Crabs in August.
  • In December 2017, Heim was traded to the Oakland Athletics as part of a deal for Joey Wendle.
  • He spent 2018 with Stockton Ports and Midland RockHounds, hitting .258 with eight home runs and 60 RBIs across 119 games.
  • In 2019, he split his time between Midland and Las Vegas Aviators, hitting a combined .310/.385/.477/.862 with nine home runs and 53 RBIs.
  • The 2020 Minor League season was canceled due to COVID-19. Despite this, Heim worked with MLB pitchers during bullpen sessions and batting practice.
  • Heim made his major league debut in August 2020, replacing Austin Allen on the active roster.
  • He played in 13 regular-season games, starting as catcher in all but one. He finished the season with a .211 batting average, no extra-base hits, and five RBIs.
  • Although he was named to the Athletics’ postseason roster, he did not play in any playoff games. After defeating the Chicago White Sox in the Wild Card Series, the team was eliminated by the Houston Astros in the Division Series.
  • He intended to rejoin the Toros del Este for the 2020-21 Dominican Winter League season, but withdrew due to COVID-19 concerns.
  • On February 6, 2021, the Texas Rangers welcomed Heim, Khris Davis, and Dane Acker to their team, trading Elvis Andrus and Aramis Garcia for them.
  • Heim scored his first major league home run against Tommy Milone, a Toronto Blue Jays pitcher, on April 6, 2021.
  • An exciting day for Heim was July 31, when he hit home runs from both sides of the plate, including his first career walk-off home run against Diego Castillo, a Seattle Mariners pitcher.
  • Heim made history on August 1 by becoming the first rookie in MLB history and the first player in Texas Rangers history to record walk-off home runs in two consecutive games. This time, it was again against Seattle.
  • In a unique turn of events, Heim got to play a major-league series in front of his hometown crowd in Buffalo, New York in July 2021. The Rangers played the Toronto Blue Jays at Sahlen Field due to the Blue Jays’ temporary relocation because of the pandemic. Heim played two games and went 2-for-7 while the Rangers were swept by the Blue Jays.
  • For the 2021 season, Heim played 82 games and recorded a .196/.239/.358/.598 batting average with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs.
  • Heim started the 2022 season strong, hitting his first major league grand slam against Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani on April 14 in a 10–5 Rangers win. This was the first and only grand slam Ohtani has given up in his major league career.
