Todd Monken wife, Terri Monken, was born Theresie Darlene Venckus on October 23, 1958. She is the one of the children born to Judy and Charles Venckus of Addison, Illinois.

In 1985, grief brought Terri Monken and her husband, Todd Monken, together. Terri was a pom-pom girl, and Todd was a member of the baseball team. They both experienced the loss of close friends after they died in a car accident.

“Todd was on the baseball team, and I was a pom-pom girl,” Terri Monken said. “So we knew of each other, but had never actually met.”

“One of the boys was a friend of mine and one was on Todd’s baseball team,” Terri recounted.

They encountered each other later when Coach Monken and Terri were at the same restaurant with friends. They reconnected at the funeral, and one thing led to another, prompting them to start dating soon after.

“We were waiting in line at the wake and I backed into him,” said Terri. This was the first time I had lost someone my age,” she said. “My emotions were raw.”

“We talked almost daily,” she said, “and that was before cellphones.”

Despite the challenges of a long-distance relationship, Todd attended Knox College, while Terri Monken worked as a health insurance plan administrator. Six years later, Todd proposed, and in 1991, they exchanged vows, sealing their commitment to each other.

“Life is a roller coaster, filled with excitement and disappointments,” Todd said. “You don’t think that funeral will turn into the greatest moment of your life where you meet your soul mate.”
