Grant Nelson, born on March 8, 2002, hails from Devils Lake, North Dakota, as the son of Nels and Meg Nelson. Coming from a large family of four brothers and four sisters, Nelson attended Devils Lake High School, where he began making his mark on the basketball court. In his freshman and sophomore years, he primarily played on the junior varsity team, gradually honing his skills for the varsity level.
However, it was during his junior year that Nelson truly emerged as a standout player, averaging an impressive 16.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.1 blocks per game, earning himself a spot on the second-team All-State. His senior year was even more remarkable, as he dominated the court, earning the prestigious title of North Dakota Mr. Basketball.
Nelson’s outstanding performance boasted averages of 25 points, 18 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks per game. His exceptional talent didn’t go unnoticed, as he garnered interest from various colleges. Ultimately, Nelson made the decision to commit to playing college basketball for North Dakota State, choosing them over offers from other notable programs.

In the 2020-21 season, during his freshman year, Grant Nelson emerged as a promising talent for North Dakota State. He was named the Summit League Sixth Man of the Year and earned a spot on the league’s All-Newcomer Team. Nelson showcased his versatility by playing in all 27 games, including five starts.
Averaging 6.3 points per game in 20.8 minutes of play, he demonstrated his ability to contribute consistently. Nelson’s defensive prowess was evident as he led NDSU with 25 blocked shots, while also displaying accuracy from beyond the arc, shooting 41 percent from three-point range in conference play.
