Originally from Montes Claros, Brazil, Cardoso pursued her high school basketball career at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During her senior year, she showcased outstanding performances, averaging 24.1 points, 15.8 rebounds, and an impressive 9.2 blocks per game. Her exceptional talent earned her invitations to prestigious events such as the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic. Garnering recognition as a five-star recruit and ranking fifth overall in her class by ESPN, Cardoso attracted attention from several top-tier college basketball programs.

Despite offers from powerhouse schools like UConn, Ohio State, Mississippi State, and South Carolina, she ultimately committed to playing college basketball for Syracuse, making her the highest-rated recruit in the program’s history.

During her freshman year at Syracuse, Cardoso assumed the role of the team’s starting center, where she demonstrated remarkable performance on the court. She averaged 13.6 points, eight rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game, solidifying her presence and impact within the team. Notably, Cardoso achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player in the program’s history to receive the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Year award.

Additionally, she shared the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors with Lorela Cubaj, as recognized by the league’s coaches. Cardoso’s exceptional contributions led to her selection as a first-team All-ACC member by the Blue Ribbon Panel, further affirming her status as a standout player in collegiate basketball.

Moving into her junior season, Cardoso continued to make significant contributions, averaging 9.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game coming off the bench. Her stellar performance earned her recognition as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Sixth Woman of the Year, along with a spot on the second-team All-SEC roster.

With remarkable consistency, she was named the tournament MVP, averaging 10.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Notably, Cardoso’s standout performance included a memorable display of 20 points and 11 rebounds in a triumphant 69–58 victory against the United States in the final match.
