Before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. became the talk of the baseball world, Ketel Marte saw him as an ally in matters of the heart. Yes, you heard that right.

Rewind to their childhood in the Dominican Republic, and Marte had eyes for a girl named Elisa. They’d known each other practically all their lives, having shared classrooms in the coastal town of Nizao. According to Marte’s father, their connection was so strong it was as if they were “destined to be together.”

But apparently, the message wasn’t clear to them.

Marte humorously recalls, “Perhaps I was a bit too pudgy for her, or something. She just wouldn’t give me the time of day.”

In an attempt to win her over, Marte turned to none other than Guerrero. Despite being five years younger, Guerrero had a unique advantage – he was Elisa’s cousin. Marte pleaded with him to vouch for him, hoping to change Elisa’s perception. But Guerrero was hesitant, “He’d often ask me to talk to her on his behalf, but I didn’t want to meddle.”

Despite Guerrero’s reluctance to play cupid, Marte managed to capture Elisa’s attention. They started dating in 2014, a year before Marte made his big league debut with the Mariners as a promising shortstop prospect. Today, they’re happily married with a son. Guerrero may not have been the best matchmaker, but he’s a fantastic cousin-in-law!

Marte, 30, sees himself as Guerrero’s elder brother, “He used to watch me play on TV. Now we’ll be on the same field, playing against each other. Seeing each other in opposing dugouts will be quite emotional and touching.”
