Ben Johnson Coaching Career
In 2012, Ben Johnson began his coaching journey with the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant coach, aiding an offense that ranked fourth in the AFC for rushing touchdowns with 15.
From 2013 to 2015, Johnson served as the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins, later being promoted to tight ends coach during the 2015 season. In 2014, he contributed to quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s achievement of over 4,000 passing yards, making Tannehill just the second Dolphins QB after Dan Marino to achieve this feat. Tannehill continued to improve under Johnson’s coaching, surpassing 4,000 passing yards again in 2015.
In 2016, Johnson’s role shifted to assistant wide receivers coach, where he played a part in the Dolphins’ success, helping them win 10 games and reach the playoffs for the first time since 2008. He worked closely with wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who recorded 94 receptions for 1,136 yards and four touchdowns, earning his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
The following year, in 2017, Johnson aided Landry in setting a franchise record for the Dolphins and an NFL-high of 112 receptions. Landry also earned his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod and caught a career-high nine touchdown passes.
Johnson’s tenure with the Dolphins continued in 2018 when he was promoted to wide receivers coach, contributing to wide receiver Albert Wilson’s impressive statistics, including the second-highest yards after catch and the fifth-highest yards per target in the NFL.
In 2019, Johnson joined the Detroit Lions as an offensive quality control coach, marking the beginning of his tenure with the team. He played a significant role in the passing game during Head Coach Dan Campbell’s inaugural season in Detroit.
The Lions recognized Johnson’s talent and promoted him to offensive coordinator in 2022 after witnessing his impact on the team’s offensive performance. Under his leadership, the Lions achieved some of the best offensive numbers in franchise history, including accumulating 4,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards in a single season for the first time. Additionally, the team ranked highly in several NFL categories, including points per game, total offense, and red zone efficiency.
Quarterback Jared Goff thrived under Johnson’s guidance, experiencing considerable success and setting franchise records in touchdown-to-interception ratio and interception rate. Goff went on a remarkable streak without throwing an interception, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Furthermore, Johnson’s coaching contributed to running back Jamaal Williams’ career milestones, including setting a new franchise single-season record for rushing touchdowns.
