He was born on June 30, 1993, in Lake Worth, Florida, where he attended at Park Vista Community High School.

He attended at North Carolina State University after receiving two scholarships from NC State & Florida Atlantic University.

Turner was selected in the 20th round, with the 602nd overall selection, of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He didn’t play in the MLB after he was drafted. Instead, he went to college.

In his freshman year of college baseball in 2012, Turner switched from shortstop to third baseman and had an impressive year. He recorded a batting average of .336, a .432 on-base percentage, and tallied 57 stolen bases while only being caught stealing four times. His 57 steals were more than the combined total of 158 Division I teams and set a new record for NC State. Turner also tied the ACC record for the most steals in one game with five, earning him a spot on the 2012 All-Tournament Team in the ACC Tournament.

The following year in 2013, Turner enjoyed another great season with a batting average of .378, seven home runs, 41 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. These performances earned him a spot on the All-ACC first team and recognition as a second-team All-American by Perfect Game, and a third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Baseball America. Turner was also a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is given to the best shortstop in NCAA’s Division I. During the summer, he played for the United States national collegiate baseball team.

As a junior in 2014, Turner had a batting average of .321, hit eight home runs and had 26 stolen bases. After the season, he was named the winner of the Brooks Wallace Award.

  • On June 7, 2014, The San Diego Padres selected him in the first round, with the 13th overall selection of the 2014 MLB Draft. 
  • The Padres traded him to the Washington Nationals on December 19, 2014.

  • On September 3, 2016, Turner was awarded the NL Rookie of the Month Award.
  • Turner signed a one-year, $ 554,900 contract with the Nationals on March 4, 2017.
  • On March 18, 2018, signed a one-year, $577,200 contract extension with Washington.
  • On July 8, 2018, Turner was named as one of five candidates for the All-Star Final Vote. He completed the season with the highest number of stolen bases in the NL at 43. During the season, he had a batting average of .271, on-base percentage of .344, and slugging percentage of .416. Additionally, he ranked third in terms of power-speed number with a score of 26.4. Turner was the fastest baserunner among all major league shortstops, with a 30.1 feet/second sprint speed.
  • On November 30, 2018, Turner agreed to a one-year,  $3.725 million contract extension with Washington.
  • On April 2, 2019, Trea Turner suffered a broken right index finger while trying to bunt against the Philadelphia Phillies. As a result, he was unable to play again until May 17. Later, on November 16 of the same year, Turner had surgery on his injured finger.
  • On January 10, 2020, avoid arbitration by signing a one-year, $7.45 million contract with the Nationals.
  • On July 30, 2021, Turner was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with Max Scherzer in exchange for Josiah Gray, Keibert Ruiz, Gerardo Carrillo, and Donovan Case.
