Miro Heiskanen Career
Miro born in Espoo, Finland on July 18, 1999, started his professional career with the Helsinki based-team HIFK at the age of 14; made his debut with the senior team at the age of 17, during the 2016-17 season.
Heiskanen’s journey in hockey began in the youth program of the Finnish Liiga club Espoo Blues, where he honed his skills until the age of 14. He later transitioned to the youth program of HIFK, another renowned Finnish hockey club. During the 2015–16 season at the Junior A level, Heiskanen’s impressive performance earned him recognition as the rookie of the year, clinching the Yrjö Hakala Award with 14 points in 30 games. This success led to a three-year contract extension with HIFK in May 2016.
In the 2016–17 Liiga season, at just 17 years old, Heiskanen made his professional debut with HIFK. Throughout the season, he showcased his talent on the team’s top defensive pairing, tallying 5 goals and 10 points in 37 games. His remarkable decision-making abilities earned him high praise from head coach Antti Törmänen, who hailed him as the team’s standout defenseman.
Heiskanen’s stellar performance catapulted him to the spotlight as a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Göran Stubb of the NHL Central Scouting Bureau lauded him as the best European defenseman in the draft class. Consequently, the Dallas Stars selected Heiskanen third overall in the draft.
Following his draft selection, Heiskanen signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Stars in July 2017. He spent the 2017–18 Liiga season on loan with HIFK, continuing to develop his skills before making his NHL debut with the Stars.
Finally made his NHL debut with the Dallas Stars on October 4, 2017, against the Arizona Coyotes.
Just three weeks later, on October 25, he scored his first NHL goal in a game against the Anaheim Ducks, becoming the second-youngest defenseman in Stars history to do so.
His impressive rookie performance earned him a spot in the 2019 NHL All-Star Game, making him only the second rookie in franchise history to achieve this honor. He finished the season with notable stats, including 17 points, placing him among the top rookie defensemen in the league.
During the 2020 playoffs, Heiskanen showcased his talent, setting the Stars’ playoff record for points by a defenseman and tallying 26 points in 27 games, placing him in the elite company of historic playoff performances.
In July 2021, Heiskanen secured a long-term contract with the Stars, signing an eight-year deal worth $67.6 million. The following season, he broke the franchise record for most points by a defenseman in a single season, previously held by Sergei Zubov, and equaled the NHL record for most points in a season by a Finnish-born defenseman, tying Reijo Ruotsalainen’s mark with 73 points.

Miro and Julia have been dating for over six years. She moved in with him to Dallas from her natal Helsinki, Finland. Julia graduated from Kotkan Lyseon Lukio in 2016 and in 23 with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Laurea University of Applied Science.

Back in 2016, Julia Taka-Ako was a salesperson at Veljekset Halonen Oy and later in 2018, held the same position at Henkilöstöratkaisu Extraajat Oy.
