Meet Kamilla Cardoso Mother Janete Soares! Kamilla is the Brazilian 6’7 center basketball with the South Carolina Gamecocks at the University of South Carolina under Dawn Staley. Before playing with the Gamecocks, Cardoso played at Syracuse from 2020 to 2021; she is also a member of Brazil’s National team.

Kamilla Cardoso’s mother, Janete Soares, welcomed Kamilla into her life on April 30, 2001. Alongside Cardoso, Janete Soares is also the proud mother of Jessica Silva. Janete Soares raised Kamilla alone in Montes Claros, Brazil. Just as it is challenging for Kamilla to be apart from her family, it is equally difficult for Janete. That’s why it was heartwarming for her to travel to South Carolina with her other daughter, Jessica, and watch Kamilla play with the Gamecocks.
On Kamilla’s senior day ceremony, it was the first time for Cardoso’s mother, Janete Soares, to see her play in person. On that memorable day, South Carolina emerged victorious, defeating Tennessee with a score of 76-68.

Originally from Montes Claros, Brazil, Cardoso pursued her high school basketball career at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During her senior year, she showcased outstanding performances, averaging 24.1 points, 15.8 rebounds, and an impressive 9.2 blocks per game. Her exceptional talent earned her invitations to prestigious events such as the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic. Garnering recognition as a five-star recruit and ranking fifth overall in her class by ESPN, Cardoso attracted attention from several top-tier college basketball programs.
Despite offers from powerhouse schools like UConn, Ohio State, Mississippi State, and South Carolina, she ultimately committed to playing college basketball for Syracuse, making her the highest-rated recruit in the program’s history.

During her freshman year at Syracuse, Cardoso assumed the role of the team’s starting center, where she demonstrated remarkable performance on the court. She averaged 13.6 points, eight rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game, solidifying her presence and impact within the team. Notably, Cardoso achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player in the program’s history to receive the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Year award.
Additionally, she shared the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors with Lorela Cubaj, as recognized by the league’s coaches. Cardoso’s exceptional contributions led to her selection as a first-team All-ACC member by the Blue Ribbon Panel, further affirming her status as a standout player in collegiate basketball.

After the season concluded, Cardoso made the decision to transfer to South Carolina. During her sophomore year, she played a supportive role as a reserve for Aliyah Boston, contributing an average of 5.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Notably, Cardoso played a crucial part in her team’s journey to clinching the national championship.
Moving into her junior season, Cardoso continued to make significant contributions, averaging 9.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game coming off the bench. Her stellar performance earned her recognition as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Sixth Woman of the Year, along with a spot on the second-team All-SEC roster.

Cardoso proudly represented Brazil at the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup held in Puerto Rico. Throughout the tournament, she showcased her talent by averaging 9.9 points and eight rebounds per game, ultimately contributing to her team’s success in securing the bronze medal. Building on this achievement, Cardoso continued to shine on the international stage.
At the 2022 South American Basketball Championship in Argentina, she delivered exceptional performances, averaging 14.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. Her outstanding contributions not only helped Brazil clinch the gold medal but also earned her the prestigious MVP honors. Undoubtedly, Cardoso’s stellar performance continued into the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Mexico, where she once again led Brazil to victory, securing another gold medal for her team.
With remarkable consistency, she was named the tournament MVP, averaging 10.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Notably, Cardoso’s standout performance included a memorable display of 20 points and 11 rebounds in a triumphant 69–58 victory against the United States in the final match.
