Meet Jackie Walden, the beautiful and loving mother of NFL player Zay Flowers, the young and extremely gifted wide receiver currently playing for the Baltimore Ravens. Flowers played college football at Boston College and at NSU University School before high school.

Jackie Walden, the mother of Zay Flowers, was born Jacklyn Annette Walden on October 14, 1967. Together with Willie Flowers, she welcomed 14 children. Unfortunately, she couldn’t partake in the joyous moments a mother cherishes with her children as she tragically passed away on October 28, 2005, due to a head injury sustained from a fall. Zay was only five years old at the time of this heartbreaking event.
“She actually fell over a wooden fence that was broken off from a hurricane that the park forgot to clean up,” Flowers said. “She was walking backwards and talking, and hit her head.”
One of those special moments occurred when the Baltimore Ravens drafted Zay Flowers. During this significant event, he wore a necklace adorned with his mom’s picture, serving as a poignant reminder that, regardless of the circumstances, she was still present with him.
In addition to Jackie’s photo on Zay’s necklace, Flowers adorned himself with a necklace featuring his mother’s picture at its center, surrounded by 14 petals symbolizing the Flowers siblings. The following day, upon his arrival in Baltimore as a Raven for the first time, he continued to wear the same meaningful necklace.
“She started us off playing football, so I felt like I needed her with me last night, and I have her with me today,” Flowers said of his mom.
Zay Flowers Father, Willie Roy Flowers born in June 1966, employed as a driver for a medical device company, courageously embraced the task of raising 14 children. He stands as a beacon of perseverance, setting an example for his ten sons and four daughters.
On May 16, 2023, Zay gifted his beloved father with a new car.
“I used to see him get up and go to work at 4 a.m. in the morning; he did that every day Monday through Friday,” Flowers said. “Then he would get up Saturday, wash our clothes at the wash house, cook everybody breakfast and take us to football games. Then, do the same thing Sunday, and then go back to work Monday. So, just seeing him do that, it gave me my drive.”

His mother, Jackie Walden, was not the only loss Zay and his family suffered; his brother Martin Flowers (b. February 19, 1991) was 26 when he was shot and killed in Sanford, N.C. on November 8, 2017.
Zay Flowers College Career
During his college football career, Zay Flowers achieved remarkable success and accolades at Boston College. In 2019, as a freshman, he played in all 13 games, showcasing his versatility by rushing for 195 yards and a touchdown, and catching 22 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns. Notably, he made a significant impact in his debut game against Virginia Tech, recording 116 all-purpose yards, including a 33-yard touchdown reception.
In 2020, Flowers continued to shine, earning All-ACC First Team honors as a sophomore. He ranked among the top receivers nationally, accumulating 892 yards, 56 receptions, and nine touchdown receptions. His standout performance against Pitt, where he recorded six receptions for 162 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, highlighted his impact on the team.
Moving into his junior year in 2021, Flowers further solidified his position as a premier wide receiver. He set numerous records for Boston College, including the single-season mark in receiving touchdowns (12) and tying the record for receptions in a season (78). Flowers also earned recognition as a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award and received prestigious awards like the Bulger Lowe Award and Season Golden Helmet Award.
Throughout his college career, Zay Flowers demonstrated exceptional skill, earning him a place in Boston College’s record books as the all-time leader in career receptions (200), career receiving yards (3,056), and career receiving touchdowns (29). - June 15, 2023: Flowers signed a 4-year, $14 million fully guaranteed rookie contract with the Baltimore Ravens.
