Meet Judy Wilpon
Judy Wilpon is the wife of 78-year-old Fred Wilpon, the majority owner of the New York Mets. Judy’s husband is also known for his real state ventures.
Fred played baseball until his first year in college when a torn rotator cuff in 1956 cut his career short. His time on the Michigan baseball team was short but never imagined in 2014, almost 6 decades later, the complex on the athletic campus that includes the baseball stadium would be named in his family’s honor.
To become the chairman and CEO of the New York Mets, Fred first became co-founder and chairman of the board of Sterling Equities.
He is also the director on the board of SportsNet New York. Since co-founding Sterling Equities in 1972, Mr. Wilpon has led its growth and evolution over four decades, amassing extensive experience in all aspects of the real estate, sports and media industries. He also supports a number of philanthropic organizations such as the University of Michigan Morris B. Kessler Presidential Scholarship, The Robert J. McGuire Scholarship at St. Francis College and Welcome Back Veterans. Mr. Wilpon received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan.
He began his undertake of the Mets in 1980. By 2002, the Wilpon family purchased the remaining 50% of the Mets. He served as president of the team between 1980 to 2002, as Chief Executive Officer since 1980 and as Chairman of the Board since 2003.His wife Judy has been there, every step of the way.
Judy Wilpon was born Judith Kessler, she is 79-years-old. She met her husband while attending college. She hold a degree from the University of Michigan, where she graduated from in 1958. She is the daughter of Irene and Morris B. Kessler.
According to an article from the New Yorker, following her graduation. Judy Wilpon got a job as a secretary. It was her husband who got her another job interview for what would become the Metropolitan Baseball Club. (later the name was shortened to the Mets) and which Judy landed. She would leave her job years later to raise her children, but her love for baseball never left.
Judy is passionate about education, healthcare, animal health. She has kept active helping those causes close to her heart. Judy Wilpon recently established the Judy Wilpon Professor of Cancer Biology at the Baker Institute for Animal Health.
Judy Wilpon and her, baseball executive husband, have given $12 million on behalf of the Fred Wilpon Family Foundation.
The couple are the parents of three adult children. Judy Wilpon is the mother of daughter, Robin Wilpon and sons, Jeff and Bruce Wilpon. Her daughter Robin, is married to Phillip Wachtler. Jeff Wilpon is perhaps the best known of the three, as the COO of the Mets. While Bruce Wilpon is a manager at Lerer Hippeau Ventures.
