Mirjam Poterbin
This magnificent woman is Mirjam Poterbin; she is the beautiful and proud mother of Slovenian basketball player Luka Doncic. While we previously told you about Anamaria Goltes, who might or might not still be dating Luka, Mirjam is, without a doubt, his #1 Girl!
Luka Doncic
Luka Doncic was born on February 28, 1999, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where he started playing basketball and football; however, after growing too tall decided to quit football and stuck to basketball. His mother once talked about that time.
“I think that Luka was born with it. Ever since he started walking, he played with a ball in his hands when he was one year old. He was doing all types of sports. He liked soccer a lot but was too tall to play. As I said, I think that Luka was born to play basketball.”
Lua started training in primary school, and not always the kids on the opposite team were his age; Luka liked a challenge, so he played against bigger kids.
“I was always training and playing with older kids who had much more experience than me. Many of them were bigger and faster than me too, so I had to beat them with my brain.”
By the time he was eight, Luke was invited to practice with the children of his age at his father’s basketball club Union Olimpija, at first he trained with boys his age, but after a few minutes later into training, they put him with the older kids. Eventually, they assigned him to Olimpija’s under-14 team.
Luka was 12 when he signed a five-year contract with Real Madrid in September 2012. In his rookie season with Real Madrid, Luke averaged 1.6 points and 1.2 rebounds in 4.8 minutes per game. Averaged 4.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists the following season. The moved to Spain wasn’t easy for his mom Mirjam.
“Of course it was difficult. It was the toughest decision I had to make in my life and Luka’s life. It was not easy, as he (Luka) left home at 13 years of age, alone, without family, without friends, to go to a city where he didn’t know anyone. Almost nobody was speaking English and so it was really tough on him. Sometimes I realize this and I say, ‘Oh my God, thank God he got past this period. It’s over.”
She moved to Madrid a couple of years later.
I moved to Madrid two years ago because he needed the support, the help, so I would say that my life changed a little bit because of this, but not too much. I’m here with my son and this is what’s most important to me. I can help him in any way, and that’s what matters.”
In the seasons that followed, Doncic averaged 7.5 points, 4.4 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game, and 3.0 assists in 42 games during the 2016-2017 season and 12.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game during his final season with Real Madrid.
Luka Doncic Height & Position
Luka Doncic’s height is 6’7 or 2.01 m; his weight is 104 kg./ 230 lbs. The position he plays is mostly a guard, but he has also excelled as a small forward.
“We call him wunderkind,” former Slovenian and current Phoenix Suns head coach Igor Kokoskov said. “He’s an upcoming, rising star. Luka is a very talented player. His ability to pass, that’s the hardest part of the game, the most difficult part to teach. To be a good passer you have to understand the game. It’s basketball IQ. He’s really unique and special at that age to understand the game well and to be a team player. He’s not necessarily playing point guard but he’s a playmaker who makes everybody else better on the court.”
